Juman Khweis, LMFT-A

I’ve been there, scheduling my first therapy session in college and navigating life transitions. Moving from a rural town to the nation’s capital was a culture shock and doing that solo, oof. Looking inward with support gave me the eye opening realizations I didn’t know I needed in that season of life and contributed to my newfound awareness as to how I show up in life and relationships, all the strengths and weaknesses. Empowerment is what I left with, knowing that I could shift and change even if others did not.

I am passionate about guiding others as they go through their own process of becoming relationally empowered. I aim to create a brave space for people to process how their childhood upbringing and trauma (which comes from the Greek word, traumatikos, meaning wound) impact their relationship to themselves, others, and the world. Revisiting these memories can be hard so I strive to provide warmth, compassion, and empathy. We are not responsible for our trauma, but we are responsible for healing from it so that we can disrupt destructive patterns that get passed down from one generation to the next.

My job is to not only validate and support clients, but to also help them grow and transform. In order to help clients be the best versions of themselves and have the most satisfying relationships, I will sometimes challenge them, ask them hard questions, and point out when they are not living in alignment with their values and goals. If this is something you are interested in, I would be honored to join you on your healing journey.

I work with individuals, couples, and families from all walks of life on a variety of issues ranging from depression to job stress to relationship problems. In particular, I am interested in helping adult siblings, as well as adult children and their parents, find more effective ways of interacting with one another. I approach sessions with active listening skills, curiosity, non-judgment, and a holistic framework which explores the connection between mind, body, and soul. I also integrate several different therapeutic approaches ranging from Emotionally Focused Therapy to Relational Life Therapy to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) which is an evidence-based treatment for processing adverse life experiences and traumatic memories.
