Program Elements
In accordance with evidence that diets don’t work, GTW structures its recommendations on what has been proven to be most beneficial for pediatric and adolescent patients regarding issues of disordered eating and weight management. After a comprehensive medical evaluation, GTW physicians work with patients and their families to design a program specifically according to their specific needs and interests, with best results expected from the following approach:
· thorough medical assessment and periodic monitoring
· nonjudgmental, achievable, solution-oriented, and individualized treatment plan
· multidisciplinary treatment team addressing medical, nutritional, psychological, and fitness needs
· customized, flexible combination of patient and family-based education and counseling
· intensive initial program (minimum 8-12 encounters spaced every 1-2 weeks)
· ongoing “maintenance” support (every 2-4 weeks for 12-24 months)
· monthly physician follow-up visits
Eligibility for Participation
· iLEAP is designed for girls and adolescent/young adult women who have concerns about nutrition, weight, or body image AND whose families are dedicated to providing support for long term behavior and lifestyle change.
